Finally, a Vegas line-focused NFL site that breaks free from the chains of the traditional boxscore. If you're looking for specialized statistics and ratings built for wagering: read on.
If you happen to be discouraged with the pace of innovation involving NFL 'power' ratings over the past 25 years then you're not alone.
My answer to the current limitations of 'Sagarin'-style ratings was to create my own, using ball movement pattern analysis that factors in the quality of the opposition involved and the context surrounding each play (i.e., field position, time on clock, current score, etc.).
The result of all this is a core group of team ratings organized by 'units' — ROF (Rush Offense); RDE (Rush Defense); POF (Pass Offense) and PDE (Pass Defense) — that when used correctly, can be a potent weapon versus the point spread.
Their values typically fall into the range of -3 to +3 and regardless of whether or not they apply to a team's offense or defense: a value above 0 always indicates a better-than-average skill level in the applicable category while a value below 0 indicates the opposite. Non-plays such as kneel downs, aborted snaps and spiked balls are not included in rating calculations.
Beyond these 4 core ratings, the STAT 2012 handicapping program also analyzes teams in dozens of other situations, including: how they do on 1st, 2nd, or 3rd/4th down; in the Red Zone; when the score is close; when passing to Tight Ends and Running Backs — the list goes on and on.
